Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of modern history. Countries around the world are desperately trying to figure out how we can keep global temperatures below a 1.5 Celsius increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While this is a massive global problem, one thing is for sure\u2014we need to use every tool at our disposal to protect the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s no secret that the emissions<\/a> generated from the Oil and Gas industry have become increasingly important environmental concerns<\/a>. The industry literally fuels our world\u2014and that isn\u2019t an easy, or environmentally friendly, thing to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the Paris agreement in sight, the oil and gas companies have a major role to play.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future of energy is green. We just aren\u2019t there yet.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oil and gas companies know that change is afoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, Deloitte surveyed <\/a>600 C-suite executives and other senior corporate leaders from oil and gas companies, chemical and specialty materials companies, power and utilities, and industrial manufacturing. The survey found that the executives of oil and gas companies were \u201cwell aware\u201d of the need for sweeping change and decarbonisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also worth noting why decarbonisation and diversification have been growing themes in oil and gas. To start, public pressure for green energy has cast oil and gas in a negative light. Making a green transition is increasingly being seen as gaining a competitive edge over other companies that rely on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But public pressure isn\u2019t the only reason companies are changing. 71% of the CEOs listed \u201cimproving the environment\u201d as one of the key benefits of decarbonisation. And oil and gas are becoming more volatile investments. The pandemic sent the price of oil to a\u00a0record low<\/a>\u00a0this year, which caused investors to pull out of the industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oil and gas companies are taking steps in the right direction. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A slow growing trend within the industry has been portfolio diversification. As the effects of climate change have grown more obvious, companies have changed their investment strategies to match the needs for the 21st century. 50% of the respondents to Deloitte\u2019s survey claim their companies are already changing investment priorities toward greener, more efficient energy sourcing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These investments\u2014largely concentrated in solar PV and wind energy\u2014remain low, but proved fruitful. When the price of oil plummeted because of the pandemic, green energy investments remained relatively stable\u2014and companies saw how valuable the green investments could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies are also developing long-term strategic plans that strive for a more sustainable future. Oil and gas companies\u2014both privately and with government partnerships\u2014have been exploring green energy for years. So it\u2019s not surprising to see that 90% of the respondents said their company has developed\u2014or is currently developing\u2014a long-term plan away from fossil fuels. And sustainability is becoming more important at all levels within oil and gas. 56% of oil and gas executives reported that compensation at their company had some link to decarbonization efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut in the longer term, the transition toward a lower-carbon future remains on track, particularly for the larger integrated oil and gas companies.\u201d (Source: Deloitte)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One way oil and gas is bringing about that change is through smart investments in technology. Deloitte\u2019s survey found that 59% of respondents cited digital technologies that improve energy efficiency and management as the most important tech to transition effectively to a greener future. As these kinds of technologies become less expensive and more easily accessible, companies are seeing the enormous advantages they bring in operational efficiency and cost reduction.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transition requires coordination, investment, and large-scale project planning. And to make green energy successful, we need to use every tool we have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So why isn\u2019t the transition happening faster?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The biggest issue is global behaviour. Oil and Natural Gas fuel almost 60% of primary energy consumption globally. These two industries make it possible for most of us to power our homes, drive cars, fly to faraway places, and connect with each other digitally. The petroleum industry provides raw materials for chemical products, fertilisers, pesticides, and plastics. And oil and gas companies create employment opportunities around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern society has been built on the backbone of reliable access to energy. And while we obviously need to explore alternative energy sources, we still must power the planet at an enormous scale. Providing enough clean power for 7.5 billion people requires serious collaboration, often among groups of people who have historic riffs. And that collaboration needs to occur in some of the most remote areas of the world, where we\u2019re lucky if there is any infrastructure. Think the middle of the ocean. Or the middle of Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oil and gas can lead the green energy revolution.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The truth is, we need oil and gas to lead the revolution for green energy. These companies are some of the most qualified candidates to make a greener future a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why? Because they have the experience of working with governments, communities, and other companies to bring energy to millions of people. As masters of large-scale project management, remote engineering, infrastructure development, and supply chain structure, oil and gas companies have all the tools we need to make green energy possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we were interviewing candidates for a job opening, these companies would have exactly the skill set we need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To reach the Paris agreement, we have to work together. And we need the expertise of oil companies to make it a reality. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
