Launched in Amsterdam in 2016, Hiber set out to build a constellation of compact satellites to connect and monitor the world’s most remote regions. From water wells in the Sahel to Arctic weather stations, the vision was bold, and the technology groundbreaking. While the original plan faced technical and commercial challenges, it laid the foundation for a more focused and impactful direction. Backed by Finch Capital and partnered with WTS Energy, Hiber has returned with renewed strength- delivering powerful, satellite-driven monitoring solutions that make operations in the oil and gas sector safer, smarter, and more sustainable.

A Smarter Way to Monitor the Energy Frontier

With millions of oil and gas wells scattered across some of the planet’s most inaccessible regions, monitoring operations in real time has remained a persistent challenge. That’s where Hiber steps in.

“There are approximately four million oil and gas wells worldwide. And they’re not always large drilling platforms or pumpjacks. The vast majority are small and remote,” explains Simon Philipsen, Managing Director of Hiber.

These sites are often located in extreme environments- from the Australian outback and South American jungles to West African river deltas and offshore locations near Malaysia. They’re also typically underserviced by traditional infrastructure.

“In addition, thousands of kilometers of pipelines run through inhospitable areas. The pressure and temperature of all those wells are rarely monitored remotely. At most, they have a few meters. Those have to be read on-site. But then you have to go there by jeep, helicopter, or boat. Then someone writes down the meter readings and leaves again. If something goes wrong the next day, no one will notice.”

Hiber’s satellite-powered technology changes that, offering a scalable, cost-effective way to monitor pressure, flow, and temperature in real time, no matter how remote the location.

After decades of leniency around environmental impact, the industry is now under growing pressure to meet both regulatory and investor expectations.

“Regulations are becoming stricter, but these multinationals are also held to stricter requirements by their shareholders. The greater the pollution, the more they have to clean up and the higher the costs, not to mention the social impact.”

For operators, real-time monitoring is no longer just a convenience- it’s a necessity. And Hiber is helping make it accessible at global scale.

Built to Last

Hiber’s satellite-connected sensors are designed with one goal in mind: reliable, long-term performance in even the harshest environments. Once installed on a remote well or pipeline, they quietly do their job- communicating vital data back to operators, without the need for constant maintenance.

With Hiber sensors and satellite transmitters, oil and gas wells anywhere in the world can be monitored from behind a desk. To conserve power, the devices stay in sleep mode for most of the time and only wake briefly to transmit data. “We only have to visit every 5 or 10 years to replace the battery.”

This level of efficiency is made possible by leveraging existing satellite infrastructure, including major providers like Inmarsat. While Hiber no longer manufactures its own satellites, the original vision of low-power, high-impact remote sensing remains at the core.

Crucially, Hiber develops and programs the sensors and transmitters in-house, ensuring tight control over performance and customization. In a major step forward, the company acquired French industrial supplier Srett Industrie just nine months after its relaunch. “That was quite a milestone, also for the employees,” says Philipsen. “It truly restored our faith.”

Accountability in a Changing Industry

As Hiber strengthens its presence in the energy sector, the question inevitably arises: what role does a tech company play in a fossil fuel world? For Hiber, the answer is clear.

“We don’t contribute to increased fossil fuel production; we contribute to safer and more profitable operations,” Philipsen explains. “If we didn’t, that production would simply continue. Whatever you think of the oil and gas industry, those resources exist. Even when they’re no longer used, they still need to be monitored for at least another 20 years.”

Looking ahead, Hiber is already preparing for a broader future. “Ultimately, we are active in an industry that is finite. By the time that happens, we’ll already be working on other applications. We’re already cautiously active in monitoring hydrogen installations and are now exploring whether we can play a role in CO₂ storage in old oil and gas wells.”

As the energy landscape evolves, Hiber aims to be part of the solution- supporting responsible operations today and enabling cleaner technologies tomorrow.

The Challenge.

One of our customers in Nigeria has natural-flowing wells in the thick of the remote Niger Delta, they’re crucial to monitor but difficult to reach.

Installing fibre-optic cable or point-to-point radio systems would be expensive, complex, and just not feasible.

The Solution.

We gave the customer a powerful dashboard of their data – without laying down a single
cable.

By installing a gateway at the flow station and attaching pressure sensors on the tubing head and flowline, they can now get their data whenever they want.

Because when you use HiberHilo to connect your natural flowing well’s flow metres to a super-reliable network of satellites, you’re not just extracting oil and gas. You’re extracting a powerful dashboard of all your own data, too.

The Results so far.

Our customer’s natural flowing wells in Nigeria produce 715 BOEPD on average. But they used to suffer around 40 hours of downtime each month, an amount that added up to a whopping $71,500 of deferred revenue.

But now they’re tracking every well with HiberHilo, they don’t need to wait to find out there’s a problem. They can respond to issues in real time.

This cuts down on downtime by 46% and has brought them barrels of value, literally, with deferred revenue sliced almost in half and a net saving of $32,890 each month with barely any effort.

Imagine a distant land in North Dakota, USA, with towering peaks and not a single bar of cell phone signal in sight. It’s here that our user case unfolds, focusing on the grit and determination of an oil and gas company striving to manage their pipelines efficiently.

The Challenges.

Out there in the rugged backcountry, the lack of reliable cell service is like an unsolved riddle. It’s the first challenge our customer faces — how to monitor everything in real-time without the luxury of connectivity. But that’s just the peak of the mountain.

The real struggle comes from dealing with ancient pipelines. These old-timers demand frequent cleanups, often requiring attention daily. Yet, knowing precisely when to initiate these cleanups is like chasing shadows. Sometimes they hit the clean button too late, and the consequence is unnecessary gas flaring, causing both environmental and financial strains. Other times, they hit it too soon, disrupting production and losing money.

The key? Find that sweet spot of optimal cleaning to cut down on flaring, keep the cash flow steady, and respect the planet all at once. It’s a puzzle worth solving.

The Solution.

In this demanding environment, our user has set up a network consisting of 28 sensors and 3 gateways to start with, all powered by solar energy. Despite the challenging conditions and high altitudes, these installations manage to maintain efficient communication and reach impressive distances.

In a bid to streamline their operations and make the most out of their pipeline network, the company has strategically installed pressure sensors. These sensors act as the vigilant eyes on their pipelines, offering real-time monitoring of pressure levels. Such real-time data is invaluable as it guides the optimization of their pigging schedule — the crucial process of cleaning and maintaining the pipelines.

By achieving a more precise and data-driven approach to pigging, they have successfully reduced flaring, a significant win for both their operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. Moreover, this strategic use of data has eliminated production losses attributed to unnecessary flow pauses during pigging, showcasing the positive impact of well-informed decision-making in this challenging terrain.

The Results so far:

In this use example, we unravel the transformative outcomes achieved through strategic advancements in pipeline management. By leveraging a meticulously designed sensor and a gateway network, the frequency of unnecessary pigging has been impressively slashed by approximately 50%. This noteworthy reduction in unnecessary pigging has not only streamlined operations but also translated into significant cost savings and minimise environmental impact.

Additionally, a commendable accomplishment has been witnessed in the domain of flaring reduction. The implementation of our advanced sensor and gateway system has led to a remarkable decrease in flaring, underscoring the sustainable practices and positive environmental contributions this technology brings to the forefront.

Looking ahead, the focus shifts towards seamless integration of the data collected. The objective is to merge this wealth of information into their existing systems, paving the way for the creation of a customised dashboard tailored to their specific use case. This integration promises to empower the company with a holistic view of their operations, aiding informed decision-making and further optimising their pipeline management processes.

The Challenge.

One of our customers in Italy was manually monitoring their old wells on an Italian island, with crews driving out to each individual well every few days, costing over $50,000 a month.
Optimising their production with manually-collected data was challenging, to say the least, because they couldn’t accurately know when a well was down or why, causing thousands of dollars of deferred revenue every single month.

The Solution.

As soon as our Italian customer started using HiberHilo, they went from data-devoid to data-driven.

First, they installed HiberHilo sensors on the production tubing of each well to monitor pressure.

Then, they turned their manual data download into a continuous flow of flow data.

The Results so far.

After they hooked themselves up to a best-in class satellite network and HiberHilo’s real-time data dashboard, the customer was fully equipped with the knowledge to properly optimise their production rate to the barrel, reducing the need for well visits by 77%.

In addition, HiberHilo’s alarms enabled the company to reduce the detection of downtime from 24 hours to 30 minutes, on average. They scaled up performance, and so can you. HiberHilo works day and night to bring you a realtime dashboard of the data you need; so you can make the right calls at the right time, every time.

A client in Latin America was looking for an affordable and easy way to install a solution to help its team connect the annular pressure of their wells, and to comply with their Well Integrity Management System.

Additionally, through the pressure readings, they were hoping to:

  • Improve their reservoir analysis and management by receiving frequent data
  • Optimise their resource allocation (people)
  • Reduce downtime
  • Optimise production

The Challenges

Most of the client’s wells worked with gaslift and were towards the end of their production life. Monitoring was done manually by operators who went out to the field every day, if the weather allowed.

Severe weather conditions were indeed a challenge: humid environment, with temperatures in spring and summer that reached 35 degrees, and the rainy season from July-November causing floods that would leave parts of the wellhead submerged.

Also, cellular coverage was only available in some parts of the field.

The client looked for a solution via an invitation to tender.

The Solution

The goal of this tender was for the client to scout different telemetry solutions to test in their field. Hiber submitted a proposal, which consisted of:

  • 6 HiberHilo Sensors per well, for 3 wells (wellhead pressure, wellhead temperature, flowline pressure, flowline temperature, annulus a pressure, annulus b pressure)
  • 1 HiberHilo Gateway
  • 1 HiberHilo Dashboard
  • Satellite Connectivity

HiberHilo’s biggest advantages in the selection process:

Ease of installation:
The other two systems required sensors, RTU and gateway; with a wired connection between the RTU and the gateway. With HiberHilo, the client only needed the sensors and gateway, and it was 100% wireless.

Good coverage and capacity:
HiberHilo provided better coverage and capacity than the competition:

  • Competitor 1: 8km coverage and capacity for 70 sensors per gateway
  • Competitor 2: 2km coverage and capacity for 96 sensors per gateway
  • HiberHilo: 8-10km coverage and capacity for 100 sensors

Satellite connectivity:
The other two solutions depended on cellular networks for the data transmission to the cloud, which was sometimes not available at the field. Our solution was able to work independently of this connectivity limitation through HiberHilo’s satellite network.

Secured Data Transmission:
One of the competitors did not have data encryption. HiberHilo has certified end-to-end encryption and the data is encoded as it goes through our system.

The Results

Among the five companies that were selected to apply to the tender, we ended up as one of the three finalists that were awarded to run a field test at the client’s facilities.

We were evaluated based on the following criteria

  • HSEQ
  • Project Management
  • Personnel Equipment
  • Connectivity
  • Data Services

HiberHilo solution was selected as the preferred solution. We are now working together with the client on the implementation of our technology for a larger scope in their field.
