Heritage Embraces Technology to Get More from Mature Assets

Heritage chose HiberHilo for remote well monitoring.

In a move towards improving production and operational efficiency, Heritage Petroleum Company Limited (Heritage) selected Hiber Global’s LoRaWAN wireless well monitoring solution, called HiberHilo, to provide real-time data for its highest-producing offshore wells.  The installation of the technology facilitates real-time data on well performance, minimizes downtime, and significantly reduces exposure to offshore environments.

This is a simpler, faster, and less expensive monitoring solution for remote, mature assets with limited instrumentation and connectivity.  “Many of Heritage’s assets need manual readings, requiring an operator to visit each location to gather information on a well’s performance.  This new technology wirelessly transmits information from the well into our systems, so issues will be identified sooner, and we can pinpoint wells that are underperforming.  Furthermore, we can do this remotely, without having to send an operator to search for the well.  This will minimize their safety exposure, reduce emissions, and improve their response time,” says Erik Keskula, CEO of Heritage Petroleum.

Heritage’s offshore selected well map

This “Industrial Internet of Things” (IIoT) technology is currently installed on Heritage’s top offshore wells, and the new data is already being securely transmitted to shore and into their monitoring systems.  Keskula says, “The teams are already utilising this system to gain insights from the new data to make better and faster decisions to optimise production.”

This installation is the first of its kind in the region.  Hiber’s Managing Director, Erik Boertje, said, “We’re excited to partner with Heritage for the first offshore installation of our wireless technology in this region. Our solution aims to boost operational efficiency, enhance asset integrity, and improve team safety. Heritage’s use of emerging technologies such as this one, sets an example for responsible operations in the industry.”

The IIoT technology is also designed to accommodate the evolving needs of the business, offering scalability, flexibility, and easy integration with other types of existing infrastructure including pipelines and compressors.  The company is embracing the new technology and is seeking to apply this in other areas to improve results across the business as it continues to grow towards sustainable high-margin production for Trinidad and Tobago.

HiberHilo now complimenting Unity’s portfolio of digital well monitoring and integrity management solutions.

Hiber, a Dutch IoT-as-a-service provider, has signed a partnership agreement with Unity, Europe’s largest provider of well integrity solutions, to bring its HiberHilo solution to the UK and European market. HiberHilo is an all-in-one remote monitoring and management solution—hardware, software, and satellite connectivity—that is easy to install and use. It is designed to improve efficiency and safety.

HiberHilo is already used around the world by dozens of oil and gas producers, including Shell, Santos, Dacian Petroleum and Niger Delta Petroleum Resources. It has been rolled out in the US, Gabon, Nigeria, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Romania, Trinidad & Tobago and Brazil. Hiber is also working with agents and partners in Malaysia, UAE, Australia, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, India, Egypt, Oman and Angola. The partnership with Unity adds Europe to HiberHilo’s global network, specifically onshore and offshore facilities in the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany and Belgium.

HiberHilo offers a range of specialised in-field sensors which gather data from wells and relay it to a secure online customer dashboard via a global satellite network. Well data is transmitted every 15 minutes to provide a clear picture of how a well is performing 24/7. Wireless pressure and temperature sensors are complemented by an ATEX-certified wired-to-wireless (W2W) sensors, which can be connected to an existing electrical sensor to deliver a LoRaWAN signal, adding e.g., flow data, methane detection, variable speed drive, torque and voltage readings to the remote monitoring solution.

This pressure, temperature, flow and other data can alert customers when a well is down so they can take targeted action faster and reduce the need for regular physical checks. It can also be used for long-term integrity monitoring or to optimise production by monitoring pressure and flow rates on producing or injector wells. For well abandonment applications, pressure data can indicate the required plugging operations ahead of time and the automated system reduces the data gathering burden on engineers and the number of crew trips required in the planning phase, reducing the operational carbon footprint. It also helps to understand annulus behaviour and anticipate potential hazards.

Erik Boertje, Managing Director of Hiber, commented on this partnership:

“These are exciting times for Hiber as we set our sights on new opportunities by collaborating with partners and agents globally. Unity’s proven track record and extensive customer base across Europe allows us to significantly extend our reach and bring the benefits of our remote monitoring solution to this major oil and gas market. Dacian Petroleum Deploys HiberHilo to Boost Efficiency of Gas Wells.

Following a successful initial pilot, Dacian expands HiberHilo installations to remotely monitor tubing pressure and other parameters at wells located in southern Romania.

MILAN, Italy [Gastech 2022, Stand 15R12]—September 6, 2022: Dacian Petroleum, an independent Romanian oil and gas company, has turned to Hiber’s HiberHilo satellite-powered remote well-monitoring solution to help it to reduce downtime and boost the productivity of its marginal gas wells. Dacian Petroleum acquired 40 onshore fields in the south of Romania from OMV Petrom

in November 2021. The aging fields comprised several wells that required a well-monitoring solution proven for use in remote locations. By selecting HiberHilo, Dacian was able to rapidly implement a cost-effective solution that enabled Dacian to proactively identify potential wellhead problems and avoid expensive shut-downs.

Impressed with the initial test phase, Dacian Petroleum has now signed a deal with Hiber to deploy HiberHilo to monitor the tubing pressure of several onshore gas wells. This agile solution digitises well monitoring using low-cost, low-power satellite IoT connectivity to gather and deliver well performance and safety data to achieve productivity and sustainability objectives.

“Our partnership with Dacian Petroleum proves that our HiberHilo well-monitoring technology delivers a fast ROI to smaller, independent operators,” said Hiber CEO Roel Jansen. “Whether a well is producing 10 or 1,000 cubic meters a day, HiberHilo can deliver insights 24/7 so that interventions can be scheduled to mitigate the impact of technical faults and maintain optimal production. This is vital for any business, no matter whether it operates high- or low-producing wells, it can be the difference between profitability or taking a real hit to the bottom line.”

HiberHilo makes it easy to bring new technologies to oil and gas production. It delivers a comprehensive remote monitoring and management solution—hardware, software, and satellite connectivity—that is easy to install and use. HiberHilo also includes digital pressure sensors and remote temperature monitoring devices that provide regular, reliable pressure and temperature data from any well, anywhere.

Dacian is using HiberHilo to transmit sensor data from the wellhead to a central dashboard so its production team can closely monitor each gas well and act in advance to prevent incidents that could cost tens of thousands of dollars in maintenance, lost production, and potential environmental liability.

According to the industry studies, through better well monitoring, oil and gas producers can expect to see as much as 10% boost in productivity, up to 4% reduction in downtime, and up to 7% improvement in ultimate recovery.

Hiber is also helping Dacian save costs through better reservoir modelling and management. For example, by monitoring water accumulations in gas wells (via accurate flowing pressure recording), Dacian can optimize the dewatering process. Being able to take action before an issue arises means Dacian reports significant savings through operational efficiency on these brownfields, improving overall profitability for the acquisition.

With its IoT-as-a-service connectivity, comprehensive feature set, and low acquisition and operational costs, the economics of HiberHilo were compelling for a growing energy company like Dacian. Dacian’s engineering team have found HiberHilo installations are fast and easy, requiring just two hours. The bottom line: Dacian could get the technology out in the field quickly and start collecting data ―and identify any problems― faster.

Dragos Chetan, senior production technologist at Dacian Petroleum, commented: “As a growing, independent oil and gas company, we needed proven remote well-monitoring technology that would deliver maximum benefit at an affordable cost. Being able to implement the technology quickly and easily was also important, given the age and condition of the wells. Like us, Hiber is a young company, and their can-do attitude and
agility in delivering this solution perfectly matched the way we like to do business.”

HiberHilo is a comprehensive IoT-as-a-service solution for the oil and gas industry
developed by Hiber in a joint venture with WTS Energy. It gathers data from sensors on
wells and relays to a secure online dashboard via a global satellite network for IoT.

Niger Delta Petroleum Resources drives innovation using Hiber’s remote well-monitoring technology.

HiberHilo uses satellite IoT connectivity to deliver industry-leading, data-driven insights for a key oil and gas producer in Nigeria.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — 30 August, 2022:

Niger Delta Petroleum Resources (NDPR), a leading Nigerian independent oil and gas company, has selected Hiber’s HiberHilo satellite-powered remote well-monitoring solution to deliver real-time production data from wells scattered across the oil-rich Niger Delta region.

NDPR is a subsidiary of Niger Delta Exploration & Production, a publicly owned company established as an investment vehicle for Nigerians to participate in the country’s foremost income generator, the oil and gas sector.

In one of the first applications of this technology in Nigeria, the deal signed with Hiber will see NDPR install the HiberHilo solution on several onshore wells. This industry-proven solution digitises well monitoring using low-cost, low-power satellite connectivity to gather and deliver performance and safety data from wells in remote, off-grid locations.

HiberHilo will enable NDPR to take a data-driven, digital-first approach to remote well monitoring, providing insights to optimize well performance, reduce exposure of operations personnel, and lower operational costs.

“We are delighted to partner with Niger Delta Petroleum Resources to bring the latest well-monitoring technology to Nigeria and help improve the efficiency and safety of their field activities,” said Hiber CEO Roel Jansen. “HiberHilo’s ability to deliver operational insights 24/7, reliably and at a low cost from wells located anywhere in the world, is making data-driven well-monitoring accessible and affordable—and with a compelling ROI. Oil producers that implement HiberHilo are leading the way when it comes to innovation and can expect to see a 10x return on their investment in terms of cost savings.”

Until now, NDPR regularly sent several crews to manually monitor wells dispersed across a wide area. Travel to these remote wellheads in a hazardous region exposed to the technical team to safety and security risks. As well, repeat monitoring trips increased the company’s operational costs

By design, production at NDPR’s wells can be halted by a safety override system that would force a shutdown if an issue such as a pressure build-up or leak was detected. While engineers may have been aware of an issue, the absence of timely delivery of well performance can impair the identification of a suspect well. Without accurate and prompt notifications, wells could experience lengthy periods of downtime and a resulting fall in productivity and loss of revenue.

With HiberHilo in place, data from several connected wells is now transmitted to a central dashboard for data collection and analysis so that well production can be closely monitored.

Hiber’s HiberHilo well-monitoring solution is delivering three key benefits for NDPR:

  1. The ease of installation and low cost of the HiberHilo solution, combined with the elimination of costs and exposures associated with manual data gathering from wells in remote locations, will reduce the overall operational cost of its well monitoring activities.
  2. HiberHilo advances Niger Delta’s drive to improve the efficiency of its production by using accurate and timely data from wells to boost productivity. Engineers will now be able to see what’s happening with specific wells so they can quickly identify wells where set safety parameters have forced a shutdown. This insight will enable them to take prompt action to mitigate costly production downtime.
  3. Replacing manual data gathering with digital insights eliminates the need for frequent journeys for operations staff, reducing crew stress and fatigue.

Dr. Ebenezer Ageh, chief technical officer at Niger Delta Exploration & Production, is pleased with the project’s progress to date. “We chose HiberHilo to reduce our operational costs and crew safety by minimising site commutes, improve our early detection of well safety issues, and increase production uptime. We are keen to implement the HiberHilo solution and begin to see its benefits,” he said.

Damilola Oluwalogbon, operations supervisor at Niger Delta Exploration & Production, confirms: “HiberHilo was selected to remotely monitor our production parameters because of its ease of installation, short installation time, and lower impact on the environment.”

Hiber Expands Data-Gathering Capabilities of Its Remote Well-Monitoring Solution.

New ATEX-certified wired-to-wireless (W2W) options enable HiberHilo satellite IoT connection to a variety of field sensors to measure flow, VSD, methane detection, and more.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — July 26, 2022: Hiber, the IoT-as-a-Service provider, has added new capabilities to its HiberHilo satellite-powered remote well-monitoring solution for the oil and gas sector, enabling connection over LoRaWAN to a wide range of specialised in-field sensors. By integrating ATEX-certified, wired-to-wireless (W2W) connectivity into the HiberHilo sensor portfolio, Hiber now provides over-the-air access to a broad array of in-field data parameters and metrics, equipping oil and gas operators with new ways to monitor and optimise production.

The latest HiberHilo sensors, equipped with W2W hardware, can convert the analogue signal from any wired sensor (4-20mA or 0-5V output) into a LoRaWAN signal. This significantly expands the range of operating parameters that can now be monitored remotely, adding flow, methane detection, variable speed drive (VSD) readings, torque, voltage (for example, to ensure cathodic protection is intact), and more. The new HiberHilo W2W hardware can be connected to any existing or new sensor installed in the field, negating the need to purchase additional devices.

Technical specifications:

  • Converts any sensor analogue output with 4-20 mA or 0-5 V into a LoRaWAN signal.
  • Battery-powered, lasts up to 8 years.
  • ATEX Zone 1 certified and IP68 certified
  • Average installation time is ~30 minutes

“Monitoring remote wells or keeping track of and optimising production of wells scattered across a wide area is difficult, expensive and complex without satellite-enabled IoT monitoring.

The combination of the enhanced sensor options, and our expertise in IoT and connectivity, means we can now support a wider range of use cases for the oil and gas industry by providing a solution that is affordable, effective, and easy to install.”

ROEL JENSEN, CEO AT HIBER

HiberHilo unlocks new use cases for operators.

The new monitoring capabilities delivered by HiberHilo solution provides operators with distinct advantages over legacy approaches:

  • Improved plug and abandonment execution. By equipping annuli with sensors to monitor pressure over a wireless gateway, HiberHilo makes it easy to collect well data so that oil producers can continually monitor well integrity and implement more stringent plug and abandonment strategies without ongoing remedial work. Further, eliminating trips to oil wells during decommissioning lowers operating costs, improves crew safety, and reduces environmental footprint.
  • Improved production for both artificial lift and natural lift wells. By installing the appropriate sensors on production tubing, operators can monitor pressure and flow data to optimise production rates. Near-real-time alerts provide downtime detection in minutes rather than hours —or, worse— at the next well visit.
  • Optimised production of injection wells. Remote monitoring of injection wells gives oil producers insights into injection rates and production output. This facilitates precision injection rate delivery, reduces downtime, and provides the means to balance marginal costs against marginal revenue.

Why remote monitoring makes sense.

Integrity monitoring in remote, off-grid locations is difficult and dangerous. By connecting the latest sensor technology to the industrial internet of things (IIoT), operators can ensure their remote wells are safe by accurately monitoring well temperature, pressure and flow, and a range of other parameters. If integrity issues manifest, operators can take immediate action to prevent spills, blowouts, and other costly and potentially environmentally catastrophic problems. As well, remote monitoring negates the inherent risks of dispatching valuable technicians to hard-to-reach places, reduces their carbon footprint, and eliminates travel costs and time.
